Catching on the Susquehanna is Starting

I had the opportunity of guiding 3 hard fishing anglers yesterday.  The forecast was calling for a sunny day with highs in the low 60’s.  After loading up my 22’ Twin Vee catamaran we headed out from the Havre de Grace Yacht Basin to the Susquehanna Flats.

The moment we rounded “G17” heading down the west side channel the reality of the cool weather set in.  I wanted to stop and put down the removable sides on the enclosure, but Don, Ken, and Capt. Charles Thrappas said, “No way”…keep moving until we find fish.

While heading south the water temperatures started dropping, and that’s not a good.  At “G17” the reading was 51.5 degrees and when we hit a normally productive location just north of Sandy Point the water temperature had dropped to 50.3 degrees. We completed a drift and without any hits so it was time to move on.  Our next stop was at the 8’ breakline just off the flats between Turkey and Rocky Points.  The water temperature had now dropped to 49.6 degrees so we kept on moving northwest.

After looping the entire Susquehanna Flats we found the warmest water to be just east of the Veterans Hospital in Perryville on the eastern shore.  The pictures tell 'the rest of the story'.
