BIG Fish Warms the Day
I had just launched my boat, on 10/26/06, when Steve, Alex, and Steve Jr. arrived at the Hanover Street ramp. The morning air was cold as we headed to the first structure. The sun had just come over the horizon as 3 different types of lures were being cast close to the shoreline. There was no action after 2 drifts so we headed west to a structure where the deep water runs against the rock pile on the shoreline. On the second drift just behind Alex’s lure was a large swirl. His Storm Rattlin’ Chug Bug was taken down and out of sight. Alex set the hook and the fight was on. After 10 minutes we got the first look of a large striped bass. The bass sounded again and I could see the rod tip move up and down while the striper was shaking its head trying to through the hook. The picture below is the trophy Alex landed. It was 34” long, weighed 20#, and had a girth of 21”.
The water temperature was 59.7 degrees, with clarity down to 6’. The birds were working the water at various. Small stripers were under the birds as we moved from school to school. Some nice white perch caught on a Hopkins Shorty in silver during the day.
Fishing Tip: Set the drag tight enough so you don’t overplay the fish, but not too tight as to straighten out the hook.
Tight Lines,
