Fall Time Stripers…On the Reel

I had some tools out to replace the wheel bearings on my trailer yesterday when I received a call from Jimmy  and he booked a trip for Sunday, Nov.5, 2006.  Jimmy wanted to expand his knowledge on the use of light spinning tackle with lures to catch striped bass.  I put the tools away and started getting the rods, reels, lures, etc. ready for today’s trip.

Jimmy and his guests, Eddie and Cathy, met me at Chesapeake Beach around 7:00am.  I had just finished putting down the side curtains on my boat to keep the wind off of us as we crossed the Bay.

It wasn’t long before Cathy landed this nice striper.

The water temperature ranged between 49.6 to 53.2 degrees, the seas were calm all day, and the air temperature was in the 50’s.  Each time the sun came out it felt 10 degrees warmer, but everyone was dressed for fishing in the cool weather and very comfortable.

Cathy, Jimmy, and Eddie were catching nice striped bass throughout the entire day.

Most Productive Lure:  Stingsilver, 2 ounce, in silver

Most Productive Technique:  Vertically jigging off the bottom with a tight line.

Fishing Tip:  If you plan on fishing during the cooler months, when the fish are larger and plentifully, and your boat has a t-top I recommend investing in a drop down enclosure.  It will keep the wind and rain off of you and make traveling very comfortable.

Tight Lines,

Capt. Tom Hughes
