The CBBT is
Giving Up Some Large Stripers
From 12/2 Through 12/7, 2006
The past week guiding at the CBBT was a true pleasure. All my clients were light tackle or fly fishing for striped bass and they caught some nice ones that were on the pilings, in between the bridges, on the shoals (both Bay and Ocean side) and under the birds.
It appears that it’s going to be a banner year so don’t hesitate if you can get down to the CBBT.
Mike Long landed this nice 42” striped bass while fishing the tube (after a long fight).

The lure was a 7” Bass Assassins in chartreuse/glitter fished on a 1 ounce jighead. This striper took the lure after it cleared the top of the tube on the down current side.
Brian Helper caught this 30” striper while fly fishing.

He was using a 9 weight with sinking fly line and a half & half, chartreuse/white fly. He said it was a Love Point striper until it pulled out all the fly line on the deck and he was playing it on the reel. This fish was on the deep side of a shoal.
Brendan Kasper caught this nice striper ‘on the fly’. I coached both Brendan and Brian to cast the fly out then count it down until it his the bottom before stripping.

Letting the fly ‘hit the bottom’ before starting to strip will reward you with many nice stripers.
Mike Cherry enjoyed the fight this 38” striper supplied on light tackle.

This on was caught on a 7” Bass Assassin, chartreuse/glitter on a 1 ounce jighead.
Five minutes later Don Dwyer also caught a nice 38” striper.

This striper was caught on a 7” Bass Assassin, Opening Night, on a one ounce jighead.
Mike Cherry then ended the day by landing this 43” striped bass

This lure is visible in the picture.
Most Productive Technique: Cast the lure out, let it hit the bottom, jig it a few times off the bottom and then start moving the lure through the water columns stopping it every 5 cranks and jig it a few times. This retrieve is done swiftly while keeping the rod tip just above the water.
Fishing Tip: The current is very swift around the CBBT. If you plan on drifting around or though the pilings keep the motor running and someone at the helm.
Note: I stayed at the Kiptopeke Inn and found the room to be clean and comfortable. They opened up the continental breakfast room around 5am each morning. This allowed me to eat and be on the water just before sunset. The price was also good as they give a fisherman discount.
