A Little Help

started fishing at 10:00am on Wednesday, Aug 1, 2007. The location was in
Maryland's portion of the Chesapeake Bay which was almost flat as we headed
to the first structure.
We did become somewhat concerned, on
what the day was going to offer, in the way of catching when we were
greeted by a few of our friends...
And as the day went on they were probable on the same slow moving log
drifting up the Bay.
Catching was tough, but that only made us fish harder
and try different techniques to entice some nice striped bass. All the
stripers we caught were larger than 18" and supplied us with some
outstanding pullage.
Most Productive Lure:
Most Productive Technique:
Putting the lure in the strike zone: The
lure should be approximately 6" below the rod tip. Put the rod tip on the
water and open up the bail. Lift the rod swiftly from 9am until 12pm, drop
the rod tip on the water, let the line get tight, and lift the rod swiftly
from 9am to 12pm. Do this until the lure is in the strike zone.
EXAMPLE: You read fish suspended from 20 to 30 feet
deep over 52 feet of water. You want the lure to be between 18 to 28 feet.
With a 6' rod do the above 3 to 4 times.
The Technique (somewhat different from last
report): With the lure in the strike zone, swiftly move the rod tip from
9am to 11:00am and follow the lure back down with a tight line. The fish
will take the lure on the drop. And as usual the larger fish will be located
near the bottom of the suspended school (or 30' with the above example).
Fishing Tip: This time of year
if you plan to practice catch and release, crush all barbs and do not
remove the fish from the water.
